When you’re architecting conversational AI systems, the goalposts keep moving. I’ve built customer service bots that handle thousands of queries daily, and yes, they’re impressive. They understand context, maintain conversation threads, and solve real problems. But AGI? That’s supposed to mean something fundamentally different—a system that can learn any intellectual task a human can.

A Bot Builder’s Take on the Definition

From where I sit, writing code and debugging conversation flows, here’s what I think: we’re conflating capability with generality. Modern language models are astonishingly capable within their domain. They can write code, analyze data, generate content, and maintain context across long conversations. That’s not nothing.

But can they learn to drive a car from scratch like a human teenager? Can they pick up woodworking by watching YouTube videos? Can they adapt to a completely novel task with zero training data?
