Your Mac’s Security Theater Problem

Apple’s macOS Privacy and Security settings are broken, and you shouldn’t trust them to protect your data.

I build bots for a living, which means I spend a lot of time requesting permissions, testing access controls, and watching how operating systems handle sensitive data. What I’ve discovered about macOS is troubling: the Privacy and Security interface that millions of users rely on to protect their information is riddled with UI issues, prone to misconfiguration, and vulnerable to bypasses that render those carefully-toggled switches meaningless.

The UI Lies to You

The most immediate problem is that the Privacy and Security panel doesn’t always tell you the truth. Users have reported persistent UI issues across multiple macOS versions where the settings displayed don’t match the actual permissions granted to applications. You might see that an app has been denied access to your files, but in reality, that app is reading your data anyway.

For bot developers like me, this creates a nightmare scenario. When I’m testing permission flows, I need to know whether my application actually has the access it’s requesting. If the UI is lying, I can’t trust my own testing. More importantly, my users can’t trust that denying permissions actually means anything.

Bypasses Are Real

The security model itself has fundamental weaknesses. Researchers have documented multiple ways to bypass the Transparency, Consent, and Control (TCC) system that supposedly guards your privacy. These aren’t theoretical exploits—malware in the wild actively uses these techniques to access protected folders and data even when the Privacy and Security settings explicitly deny access.

Think about what this means: you can go into System Settings, carefully review every application’s permissions, deny access to anything suspicious, and still have malware reading your files. The security theater is complete.

Misconfiguration by Design

Even when the system works as intended, it’s easy to misconfigure. The Privacy and Security interface has grown increasingly complex as Apple adds new permission categories. Location Services, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Photos, Camera, Microphone, Files and Folders, Full Disk Access—the list goes on. Each category has its own quirks and edge cases.

For someone building automation tools and bots, this complexity is a feature. I need granular control over what my applications can access. But for average users, it’s a minefield. One wrong click, one misunderstood permission prompt, and you’ve granted access you didn’t intend to give.

The Open Source Question

There’s a deeper issue here that the security community keeps pointing out: macOS isn’t open source. We can’t audit the code that enforces these privacy controls. We can’t verify that the TCC system actually does what Apple claims it does. We’re asked to trust a closed system that has repeatedly demonstrated it can’t be trusted.

When I’m architecting bot systems that handle sensitive data, I need to assume the worst about every component in the stack. That includes the operating system. If I can’t verify how privacy controls work, I can’t build reliable security on top of them.

What This Means for Bot Builders

If you’re building intelligent systems on macOS, you need to implement your own security layers. Don’t rely on the OS to protect your users’ data. Assume that any permission you request will be granted, whether the user intended it or not. Design your applications to minimize data access and implement additional authentication steps for sensitive operations.

The Privacy and Security settings should be your last line of defense, not your first. Build as if they don’t exist, because functionally, they might not.

Apple has built a reputation on privacy and security, but the reality doesn’t match the marketing. Until these fundamental issues are addressed—and until we can actually verify the fixes—treating macOS privacy controls as reliable is a mistake that could cost your users their data.
